Illinois Hunting and Trapping Digest (The Digest)
The Illinois Digest of Hunting and Trapping Regulations (The Digest) is published annually (generally around the time State Fair begins). We always recommend having a digital copy to search and at least one hard copy to flip through. Keep in mind that the Digest is a summary of the wildlife code and does not constitute legal advice. If you have a question about a regulation, contact us or ask your local conservation officer for clarification.
Hunt Illinois
Hunt Illinois is an IDNR website aimed at informing the public about all things Illinois hunting and trapping, from finding details about a specific IDNR hunting site, buying credentials, and reporting a harvest to learning more about hunting safety and gaining an overview of all species seasons and hunting related events. Information can be found by species you are interested in pursuing or IDNR site you are interested in visiting. Much of this information can also be found on the Hunting/Trapping sections of the original IDNR website (discussed below). This website is a little bit more user-friendly than the regular IDNR page, and has helpful tools like the License Finder, Site Directory, Seasons/Lotteries Calendars you can add to your email’s calendar, and the Hunt Map. That being said, Hunt Illinois often links back to the IDNR Hunting and Trapping site, and vice versa.
A note about Hunt Illinois’ Site Directory. Sometimes, these pages are out of date, so we always recommend that you 1) contact the site superintendent with questions and 2) make a trip to the site itself to get a hard copy of that season’s printed site regulations so you make sure you are operating on the most up-to-date information available. It is your responsibility to make sure you are aware of and understand site-specific regulations, even when the website is out-of-date.

Hunting and Trapping in Illinois is the IDNR’s landing page on their main site for all things hunting and trapping. If you cannot find updated information on Hunt Illinois, you may be able to find it on this page, instead.
Illinois Wildlife Code
The Illinois Wildlife Code is a set of statutes (520 ILCS 5/) that contains the framework for managing all wildlife in Illinois. You can search the code to find the exact language used for each species and for regulations associated with firearms, archery, trapping, and other topics.
Administrative Rules
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources administers and enforces the state regulations regarding wildlife found in the Fish and Wildlife section of the Illinois Administrative Rules (also called “Ad Rules”). These rules apply to IDNR-owned and managed sites and can be searched by keyword.
This is where some of the trickier site-specific rules can be found, if you want to see where they originate from on Hunt Illinois. An example of this is the decoy minimums and maximums that exist when hunting waterfowl at specific sites, and vary from site to site.
